Essentials: LG Chocolate 3

A few weeks ago, I upgraded my phone from the Motorola RAZR to the LG Chocolate 3. I had my RAZR for just over two years and it was a great phone– until I broke it in half.

It's pretty... and pretty crappy.

It's pretty... and pretty crappy.

The past few weeks of Chocolate 3 use in a few words: what a nightmare. I picked this phone because it was the prettiest and cheapest flip-phone the Verizon store offered. I don’t require a lot out of a cell phone, but in my mind there are two things a phone must do. First, it has to be able to last several days on one charge. If I am out and forget to bring a charger with me, I expect my phone to last at least 48-hours (with some talk time). Second, the reception on my phone needs to be top-notch. The last thing I need is to be talking to someone in a perfectly good service area, only to have my phone unable to perform. The Chocolate has failed me in both of these areas.

I can no longer take calls in my bedroom. With my RAZR, I had some problems with it but generally was okay to talk. Now, if I answer the phone upstairs at all it immediately drops the call or greets me with silence and static. So, every time my phone rings I must first race downstairs before I answer. The battery is on par with my 2+ year old motorola battery–I talk for fifteen or twenty minutes and a bar of charge-tastic power is gone.

However, there are some things that I do like about the phone. It has a front screen where one can access messages, music, and pictures. The phone itself is a nice size, easily fitting into the hand and even more easily flipping open when answering a call. The keypad is large enough that my thumb is not accidentally pressing buttons I did not want to press. It also has a normal headphone jack and a scroll wheel, both convenient if used as a music player. (The phone has 1G of internal space, but also a microSD slot for added storage). Admittedly, the scroll wheel feels very cheap and is rather hard to get used to after the genius that is the iPod scroll wheel. The camera is also quite nice. I can take a picture of myself on the large front screen, or I can take a picture of my cat on the ample inside screen.

Okay, so if I could do it again I would avoid this phone like I would avoid an army of flesh devouring zombies.
